Cusco - the navel of the world through Inca eyes - and the Sacred Valley are undoubtedly the most popular attractions in Peru. And it’s easy to see why. Cusco is a beautiful colonial city built on top of what are the remains of the Incas’ capital. A stunning cathedral dominates the Plaza de Armas which is overlooked by the old Inca ceremonial complex Sacsayhuaman, from where you can observe the mass of red-tiled roofs and white-washed walls of Cusco itself, nowadays dubbed the gringo capital of South America. And, indeed, a number of foreigners have set up home here, many of whom run tour companies, restaurants or cafes. Of course, the main reason visitors come to Cusco is to travel on to the Sacred Valley, home to the magnificent citadel of Machu Picchu. These stunning Inca ruins were only discovered at the turn of the 20th century and are now accessible by foot following the Inca Trail or by train.

Besides Machu Picchu there are numerous other Inca ruins in the area which are well worth a visit such as those near Pisac, which also hosts a colourful market where traditionally-dressed Quechuas gather to sell their wares, and Ollantaytambo. Also, Choquequirao, south west of Machu Picchu has become popular and to the south west are the Inca ruins of Tipon and Pikillacta.
